Mechanics and Motion

Equation of Motion 1

v = u + atUnit: m/s
What it means: Final velocity = initial velocity + (acceleration x time).
Example: Car starts at 10m/s, accelerates at 2m/s squared for 5s. v = 10 + 10 = 20m/s

Equation of Motion 2

s = ut + half at squaredUnit: m
What it means: Distance covered. u is initial velocity, a is acceleration, t is time.
Example: Same car: s = 10x5 + 0.5x2x25 = 75m

Equation of Motion 3

v squared = u squared + 2as
What it means: Use when time is not given but you know distance.
Example: u=0, a=9.8, s=20m: v squared = 392. v = 19.8m/s

Newtons Second Law

F = maUnit: Newtons
What it means: Force = mass x acceleration.
Example: 5kg box accelerates at 3m/s squared. F = 15N
